U.S. Diplomat Shot in Mexico: Chino Hills Man Charged With Attempted Murder

A resident of Chino Hills was deported to the U.S. from Mexico and charged with attempted murder, the DOJ says. VIDEO.

CHINO, CA — A Chino Hills man accused of shooting and wounding a Guadalajara, Mexico Consular Official on Friday was arraigned on Tuesday afternoon in Alexandria, Virginia federal court, according to the Departmeht of Justice.

Zia Zafar, a 31-year-old U.S. citizen, was deported from Mexico and arrested Monday, according to a recent release by the Justice Department. He was then charged with attempted murder of an internationally protected person.

"Zafar disguised himself and followed the Vice Consul of the U.S. consulate in Guadalajara through a parking garage to his vehicle," the release said. "After the Vice Consul got into his car and drove towards the garage exit, Zafar allegedly shot him once in the chest and fled."

The vice consul, Christopher Ashcraft, was taken to a local hospital where he remains in stable condition.

In the below video, posted by the consulate, a shooter can be seen lying in apparent wait for the vice consul's car before shooting at the driver and running away. (Warning: Graphic content).

There was no apparent motive for the shooting released in the court papers.
