Walnut Street Maintenance Project to Start in April

Several Walnut streets will be revamped as part of an annual maintenance effort.

Construction on the planned $1.23 million slurry seal project is expected to start in early April and be completed by the end of May, according to city officials.

The Walnut City Council last week voted 5-0 to award a bid to Doug Martin Contracting for street improvements. The council also voted to appropriate money from the MTA Measure R and the Gas Tax funds to pay for the project.

The project involves the placement of 4,695 extra long tons of slurry seal in Maintenance Area 1 and 7, according to a staff report.  Slurry seal is a roadway facelift of sorts, a more on-the-surface maintenance process that keeps roads from having to be resurfaced as often.

The boundaries for Maintenance Area 1 include Vista Hermosa Drive on the north, Lemon Avenue on the east, Valley Boulevard on the south, and Vista Rambla on the west. 

The streets bordering Maintenance Area 7 include Stockton Pass Road on the north, Ironshoe Court on the east, Valley Boulevard on the south, and Silver Valley Trail on the west.

The city originally received bids for the project in March 2012, but the council rejected them because they were higher than expected because of the volatility of oil costs, according to staff.  The council directed staff to re-bid later in the year.
