Walnut to Seek Bids for Creekside Drive Rehabilitation

The street rehabilitation project is estimated to cost $700,000.

Creekside Drive will soon be a smoother ride for motorists.

The city of Walnut plans to put a project out to bid to rehabilitate the busy thoroughfare.

The Walnut City Council voted 5-0 last week to approve the plan and authorize the city engineer to put the estimated $700,000 pavement rehabilitation project out to bid. Funds for the work have been appropriated in the capital improvement budget, according to city officials.

Each year, the city inspects and rates streets and roads in town as part of the Pavement Management Program.

“Creekside Drive is at a level where resurfacing and rehabilitation is necessary to extend the life of the roadway surface,” City Engineer David Gilbertson said in a report to the council.

The repairs to Creekside between Amar Road and Shadow Oak Drive will include the grinding of the edge of the road and an overlay of asphalt.  The revamping of the portion of the street between Shadow Oak and Lemon Avenue will involve rehabilitating and replacing damaged asphalt pavement and base material with new concrete and reconditioned base material, according to Gilbertson.

The process is meant to rebuild worn out pavement by recycling existing material.

“The old asphalt and base materials are pulverized, mixed with cement and water, and compacted to produce a strong, durable base,” Gilbertson said. “New asphalt pavement is placed on this reconditioned base. “
