Walnut Woman Sentenced in Fatal Hit-and-Run

A Walnut woman who was arrested in November and later pleaded no-contest to one count of felony hit-and run was sentenced and released from jail Wednesday, according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

Ashley Lopez, 22, received 360 days in jail and five years of formal probation. She was given credit for her jail time and released after sentencing, the newspaper reported.

Lopez was arrested in November after she struck pedestrian Cu Lee Nguyen, 80, with her car and fled the scene.

Nguyen, a Baldwin Park resident,  was crossing Live Oak and Stewart avenues in Irwindale when hit and killed, according to authorities. 

The driver fled the scene and did not attempt to render aid to Nguyen, who died at the scene, authorities said.

An eyewitness identified the suspect's car as a 2000 silver Toyota Echo and described the driver as a woman with dark-colored, shoulder-length hair, Camacho said.

With the help of local media, Irwindale police got a number of leads, and Lopez was arrested Nov. 5 at her workplace in Irwindale, authorities said.

Lopez pleaded no contest late last year, the newspaper reported.
