WVUSD Board Honors Students and Parents

The recipients of the recent awards were from Walnut Elementary and Walnut High School.

The Walnut Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees recognized Walnut Elementary and Walnut High star students and parents during the meeting held on March 20

Kelly Poon was honored as the Super Star Student from Walnut Elementary School.

“She is an extremely well rounded fifth grader who exemplifies what a 21st Century Learner should be,” said Principal Janet Green.

Kelly maintains a consistently high grade point average and is a GATE student involved in the school’s Forensic Science Club. 

“She is a musician who plays the violin in our Orchestra, plays flute in our Band, and sings in our Showcase Choir,” the principal added. The fifth grader also helps out in kindergarten classes, is involved in the after school art program, and swims competitively with the El Monte Sharks.

“Kelly is able to do all this with the loving support of her highly involved parents who take advantage of every opportunity at Walnut Elementary including workshops from ELAC and our Parent Institute for Quality Education,” Green said.

Parent Yesenia Alrez was honored as Walnut Elementary School’s Partner in Education.

“She is a true partner in everything that happens here at Walnut Elementary,” said Principal Green.

“She has been a volunteer extraordinaire and a trustworthy Community Club leader for several years,” Green added.

Walnut Elementary staff members described her as caring, committed, confidential, dedicated, generous, reliable, and thoughtful.

“Yesenia volunteers for every fundraiser that we have in addition to working in the library and in the classrooms.  She is an incredibly supportive mother to Wally, Kalvin, and Hanna, and, along with her husband, has taught them the importance of giving back to the school,” Green said.

Walnut High School parent Martha Carrasco was honored with the Partner in Education award.

“Martha is our current Latin American Parent Association (LAPA) leader,” said Principal Jeff Jordan.

“She has been instrumental with supporting our Hispanic students and their parents by providing various informational meetings from colleges and universities. Martha also organizes workshops as well practice SAT exams for our students,” he said. 

Two Walnut High seniors, Heidi Shelton and Mauricio Madrigal were lauded as Super Star Students.

Heidi Shelton was recognized for her hard work and dedication at Walnut High School. She is in Band, takes AP courses, and was recognized as a 2013 National Hispanic Scholar.

Mauricio Madrigal was honored for his participation on campus, He is an AP student, Men’s Ensemble, the school Musical, and a 2013 National Hispanic Scholar, Jordan said.
