Amid Loss Of Officer, CHP Golden Gate Serves Solano Co. Homeless

SOLANO COUNTY, CA — The best way to boost morale for Golden Gate Division California Highway Patrol personnel after losing a fellow CHP officer to gunfire in a Southern California traffic stop —with another officer still in critical condition — was finding more ways to serve the community.

Tuesday, CHP officers did just that when they showed up as planned to serve lunch at a local church in Vacaville, Epiphany Church, according to CHP Golden Gate Chief Ernie Sanchez.

The CHP crew personally bought the ingredients, including hot dogs, which they cooked up and served to area homeless and disadvantaged residents, Sanchez told Patch.

On Wednesday, those same CHP personnel will gather at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento to honor their fallen brother, Officer Andre Moye.

The 34-year-old husband, father, son and brother, was shot and killed Monday during a traffic stop in Riverside. As Moye was impounding the motorist's vehicle, the driver retrieved a firearm from the vehicle and began to fire at him. Two other CHP officers were injured, one critically.

"Wednesday, when planned as a celebration of the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) 90 years of Safety, Service, and Security, is now a day to mourn the sacrifice of yet another of our state’s faithful servants," CHP officials said in a news release. "A bell toll tribute ceremony will be held in memory of CHP Officer Andre Moye Jr. who was killed in the line of duty on Monday. Since Aug. 14, 1929, there have been 231 heroes who lost their lives courageously serving the people of California."
