When Choosing Kids Activities, Look Local 1st!
There are more local options for kids activities than folks may be aware of...

Being the obsessive compulsive mom that I am, when moving here I was on the hunt to find all of the possible options for activites for my kids. Also, as we are a family of five living on one income, finding the best program for the best price is always an issue too! I have to say, that coming from an isolated, tight knit community where we all knew where to go and what to do, I found many treasures in this suburbia/urban sprawl area that are very under utilized or just not even know of. In part it seems due to the fact that the small and more affordable places don't advertise well for themselves. Also, many leave our town and go do activities in Vacaville or Davis which is also fine.
However, as I'm big into supporting the small, local, community based projects, I'm going to give a plug for some specific programs that I see as affordable and under used... This is not at their request mind you, just a hope that others will come out and support them too! I have to admit, my intentions are partly selfish though. I want to ensure that they are able to make enough to stay an option for our family!
For one, there were many interesting and affordable workshops offered through the City of Dixon Rec Dept last summer such as kids cooking, science and a class exploring a variety of sports that we kept signing up for an NOT A ONE had enough sign ups to make it!! I was just dumbfounded!! I see that none of these are to be offered this summer due to lack of support. :/

Also, Jamie over at has a nice little musical theater program going that is very personal, non-threatening, affordable, close and a great as an introduction to dance, singing and drama! Our spring dinner theater is this sunday at the at 5:30 p.m., btw if you want to check out what she single handedly does. The upcoming summer program will be a patriotic theme. If you call or come by, tell her I sent ya! :)
I would like to say in closing, that even if you don't choose these particular programs, please get out there and support something here in town or at least check them out before going elsewhere!
