DFS Thrift Store Needs Some Donations; Opens in July

Dixon Family Service’s new thrift store (to open sometime in July) is looking for a few good donations.

As you might expect, they could use a lot of hangers of all varieties. They could also use clothing racks upon which the hangers would hang, shelving, glassed-in display cases, a cash register, and, of course, clothing.

Also accepted in good shape are household items, small furniture, small electronic items, dishes and other kitchen items, jewelry, collectibles, luggage, shoes, artwork, and books. They are not looking for large appliances, mattresses, baby furniture and equipment (including car seats), tires and automotive parts.

Donations can be left now at Dixon Family Service’s (DFS’s) main building at 155 North 2nd Street during their business hours of Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Call 707-678-0442 first so DFS will be ready to receive the donation.

They will also need more volunteers than they currently have to staff the additional building.

The unique and historical building housing the new thrift store is located at 409 North Adams St. in Dixon, at the corner with ‘D’ St. The building offers 1,300 square feet of retail space along with parking. Even after the store opens in July, donations will continue to be left at DFS’s main building on North 2nd St.

At some point, says Executive Director Cookie Powell, DFS hopes to begin a program at the thrift store to allow low-income clients to work there in exchange for credits to purchase clothing and other items. Proceeds from the store will help fund DFS programs in Dixon and the surrounding area.

In other activities, DFS will have a parking lot sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, next to their main office on North Second St. Also, the Solano County Dental Van will be there from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to provide dental work or assessments for future work that can be done at the county clinic. The Food Bank produce trucks will also be there Wednesday morning to hand out free fruit and vegetables to those who income-qualify. The produce truck is there every first and third Wednesday.
