DIXON, CA – The 2017 Dixon May Fair, May 11 -14, will focus on “Farm to Fair” as the community celebrates its 142nd fair and the importance of agriculture to Solano County.
"Our theme ‘Farm to Fair’ serves as a reminder that fairs have been showcasing and promoting agriculture for over 200 years. Fairs educate the public about agriculture, as well as entertain. Fairs have created a standard of perfection for many agricultural commodities and practically everything entered in the fair competitive exhibits comes from agriculture, so we thought this theme was only fitting," said Patricia Conklin, CEO of the Dixon May Fair.
Agricultural societies, which were started in the early 1800s, put on shows in which farmers and ranchers could compete while exhibiting their animals. The societies were primarily organized by counties, which led to county fairs and the agricultural districts of California, organizers said.

The events further developed into a showcase for produce, baked goods, handwork, and now we find hundreds of categories for competition at the Dixon May Fair, in addition to livestock.
The Jr. Livestock Auction also offers an opportunity for the public to purchase beef, swine, lambs and poultry directly from the youth who raised them on their farms and ranches. The livestock shows and still exhibits are educational opportunities as judges offer critiques and compliments along with Blue Ribbons.

Yes, there are carnival rides, clowns, musical entertainment and grandstand shows, but the basis of all California Ag District and County Fairs comes from the farm, organizers said.
