Dixon May Fair Viewfinder: Kids and Teens Show Off Their Pigs
You can't train hogs like dogs
The first day of California longest-running local fair, Dixon's May Fair, kicked off at 8 a.m.Wednesday Β with the swine show. This gave area 4H-ers and FFA members a chance to exhibit pigs they'd raised themselves. The judge was James Backman from Denair, CA.Β
Some hogs were calm enough to sleep in their pens before being shown, but others were nervous about being in a strange environment. Their young owners, too, were often nervous about getting their pigs to display properly in front of the judge.Β
Some of the young people showed obvious attachment to the animals they'd raised, so eventually selling them to become meat products must be difficult.

There were two categories of judging: showmanship and market. Β
