Dixon Patch Viewfinder: City Folks Bring Food Staples, Blankets to Migrant Workers

Migrant center is along Radio Station Road

The large southeast of Dixon along Radio Station Road was visited by a caravan of cars and trucks bearing gifts on June 29. The center is run by the Yolo County Housing Authority (even though it's in Solano County). 

The approximately 80 families living there during the summer agricultural season were being visited by eight volunteers and staffers from . They brought bags of food staples (the food was mostly collected by Dixon's during a food drive in May) and blankets collected by Dixon's

Dixon Family Services Executive Director Cookie Powell said the visit had been originally scheduled for April when the migrant workers first arrived, but had to be delayed several times. Also, she had hoped to deliver bags of food to every living unit, but it was decided there wasn't enough time to do that, so the donations were left in the center's community center.

The center closes in November and the workers' children attend summer school in Dixon or a pre-school at the center. Maria Pena is the center's director.
