Dixon Patch Viewfinder: Different Birds Seen on a Morning Walk

Yellow-tinged bird is a mystery

I bought a 75-300 mm telephoto lens for my digital SLR camera and found a day when the rain had tapered off. My goal was to photograph at least 10 different birds in Dixon on one walk, and I succeeded! Check the captions to see which birds I could positively identify. Those five birds I'm not sure about -- some of you birdwatchers can help me out.

I feel most fortunate to have gotten a shot of a hawk along North Lincoln St. near Safeway. I don't think I've ever seen a hawk in Dixon while walking. I think it was a sharp-shinned hawk considering the notch in its tail, but maybe not.

I thought for sure I'd have a shot of a blue jay, and saw one or two, but was unable to get a shot.

Oftentimes you can hear the birds before you can see them. A number of them visit my backyard from time to time, especially the jays.

Did you know that magpies and jays are members of the crow/raven family of birds?

Maybe during the summer I can take another bird walk and find 10 new species to photograph.
