Reopening Timeline Update

As of the weekly Solano County Department of Public Health this afternoon, we have not yet reached all of the conditions that qualify us to begin moving into the red tier. The category that we have not met is the number of cases per 100,000 population. We must be at 7 cases or less per 100,000 population. While we were told the numbers have improved since the last formal announcement on Tuesday, February 23rd, we must abide by the weekly announcement made by the State each Tuesday. This most recent figure was 21.1 cases per 100,000. The announcement coming on March 2nd is not expected to be at the 7 cases per 100,000 figure. While we could be surprised with the update next week, we are most likely to see results that do not move us to conditions that begin to start our four-week timeline for reopening.

To simplify the above and predict its impact, conditions have improved but not to the level that we need to begin our reopening process. It is most likely - although not certain - that our reopening will be forced to be pushed back from the week of March 16th to the week of March 22nd. We will receive the official information on Tuesday and provide an update that day to confirm our target date.

As we said when our Board approved the reopening plan last week, we are dependent on being in the red tier and our dates were subject to change based on this factor. It appears that we are experiencing this issue right now.

Family Choice for Distance Learning

As we have stated from the beginning of the pandemic-related closure, families will have a choice to remain in a Distance Learning model at the point when we resume in-person instruction. Approximately 27% of our families stated that this would be their preference in the survey conducted two weeks ago. We are now at a point in our planning where we need to have formal decisions made by families for each of their children if they wish to remain in Distance Learning.

Students will be enrolled in the in-person hybrid model unless their family notifies the District of their choice for their students to continue in Distance Learning. The District will be mailing, emailing, and posting a form on our website next week for families to complete and return if they wish to stay in Distance Learning. The form will have very specific regarding the information that we need and the timeline for providing a response. We cannot overstate how important this information will be in our planning process, and families who do not respond in time risk not receiving their preferred placement.

Please look for this to come your way in the middle of next week.

Vaccinations for Staff

We wish that we could report significant progress in staff members being vaccinated, but opportunities for them have remained limited. The Solano County Office of Education did host a clinic today for staff members in schools that are already providing in-person instruction to students. Most of these were in charter and private schools, with much smaller numbers from school districts operating small group instruction for students with disabilities. We have expressed our strong interest in having our staff vaccinated as we know that it will help in our reopening efforts. We have been told that school district employees will be given higher priority in the coming weeks.
