Dixon Unified School District Start Of The School Year Update August 4, 2020

At a Special Meeting on Monday, August 3rd, the Governing Board of the School District voted to delay the start of the school year by two weeks. The new start date will be August 24th instead of August 10th. The revised calendar will become official when negotiations are completed with the Dixon Teachers Association and they have approved the new date. The District and Association are meeting on a daily basis to complete the process and will announce any agreement as soon as it has been reached.

Simply stated, the delay in the start of the school year will allow the District to complete additional planning and provide more professional development and training for our teaching staff in preparation for Distance Learning. The Teachers Association and District Administration agree that there is a need for additional preparation, and the existing calendar does not allow the time for that work to take place. The approval of the additional days for preparation is part of the negotiation process.

We have attached the newly revised calendar for your information at this time. The changes from the previously adopted calendar can be summarized as:

• The first day of school for students is August 24th.
• Final exams for the Fall Semester at Dixon High are moved from December 16-18 to January 20-21.
• January 4th and 5th were scheduled as vacation days and are now regular school days with attendance for all students expected.
• A full-week break from February 15th-19th has been changed to a four-day weekend consisting of no school on February 12th and 15th.
• The adjustments in January and March total five of the ten days that we need to recover based on the delay to the start of the year.
• The end of the school year is moved from June 3rd to June 10th. This change provides the other five days that we need to recover.

Again, the Governing Board approved this revised calendar last night with the implementation of it dependent on the District and Dixon Teachers Association finalizing our agreement. We are continuing to work on that every day and will keep the community informed regarding our progress.

Please look for additional information regarding the start of the school year coming from each of the school sites in addition to these District-wide messages.

En una reunión especial el lunes 3 de agosto, la Mesa Directiva Escolar votó a favor de retrasar el inicio del año escolar por dos semanas. La nueva fecha de inicio será el 24 de agosto en lugar del 10 de agosto. El calendario revisado se volverá oficial cuando se completen las negociaciones con la Asociación de Maestros de Dixon y hayan aprobado la nueva fecha.
