Dixon Weekend Planner September 8-11

From a Hydroplane Series, the 2nd Friday "ArtAbout" in Davis and "Trophy du Trash" competition to a Blackjack Run benefiting local charities, the 9/11 memorial at the Dixon Fire Department and a concert at Full Circle Farm, there's plenty to do.

Thursday:

The Air National Guard Hydroplane Series will feature a four-boat exhibition race on Folsom Lake today. The last time hydroplanes raced on Folsom Lake was 1967. The exhibition will gauge whether the series can stage a race on the lake and raise community interest for a regular-season race in May 2012. Boats taking part in the exhibition are: Peters & May driven by JW Myers; Albert Lee Appliance driven by Brian Perkins and the Degree Men driven by J. Michael Kelly.

If you go: The race is from 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Folsom Lake, at the end of Douglas Blvd in Granite Bay.

Join friends and family for this monthly evening of open galleries and artists’ receptions at businesses, galleries and other art-friendly locations in Downtown Davis and beyond. Many venues include receptions, refreshments and opportunities to meet artists. Part of the beauty and fun of the ArtAbout evenings is witnessing the transformation and adaptation of local businesses into “instant” art galleries.

Friday: 

Come on by for this free high-energy art event, in which teams of artisan gladiators compete for the coveted “Trophy du Trash” in a timed “sculpt-off” using recycled materials.  Enjoy food, beer & wine for purchase, while you root on your favorite team and listen to great music.

If you go: The free event is from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Davis Art Center, 1919 F Street in Davis.  Thinking you’d like to sign up? Davis Art Center will place those who sign-up individually on a team with other aspiring recycling artists. ($15 each for ages 13+). Sign up online through their class registration system.

 

Saturday:

Presented by Iron Riders Motorcycle ClubThe 3rd Annual Blackjack Run benefits local charities. The There will be a raffle, 50/50,  live music, food and drink vendors and more. Additionally there will be a $2 bacon and egg breakfast!

If you go: Registration is $20 and begins at 9 a.m. at , 105 N 1st Street in Dixon. This event goes on rain or shine.

 

Saturday:

Come on out and support the Dixon Cub Scouts pack 253 in their popcorn sales.  The boys will be out selling a variety of popcorn. 

If you go:  The scouts will be selling popcorn from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of , 1235 Stratford Avenue in Dixon. Go scouts!

 

Sunday

Dixon's 9/11 memorial will be highlighted by I-0094, the name of the piece of steel that the received from the remains of the World Trade Center. They will unveil its 9/11 Memorial today. Guest speakers include a retired New York City Firefighter who now calls Dixon his home. A 9/11 Memorial in front of the fire department will feature the piece of steel and serve as a local place where Dixonites can reflect on 9/11.

If you go: The memorial begins at 4 p.m. at the , 205 Ford Way in Dixon.

 

Sunday:

Come out to the edge of Davis for fun on the farm. Bands include, The Voodoo Fix (rock-blues alternative group), Marlene Marlene, Honyock, and Sonada Malay. Local produce, and other vendors will be available including free produce samples. The Voodoo Fix's Fall "Tour-Ganic" brings together farmers, artists, community organizers, and the general public on Organic Farms and Sustainable Communities to raise funds for Independent Farmers nation-wide and create awareness about the importance of going organic.

If you go: Tickets are $10 for adults, children under 10 are free. The concert is from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Full Circle Farm, 24830 County Road 95 in Davis.
