VACAVILLE, CA – A two-alarm fire destroyed part of the interior of the Mission on the Hill event center in Vacaville and caused heavy smoke damage early Sunday morning, a deputy fire chief said.

The fire at 1300 E. Monte Vista Ave. was reported at 5:06 a.m. as a tree fire but was quickly discovered to be a structure fire, Vacaville Deputy Fire Chief Alan Hartford said.

The fire started inside and spread to an outside gazebo, and a hidden attic space was difficult to access. No one was inside at the time, Hartford said.

Firefighters from Vacaville, Fairfield and the Vacaville Fire Protection District controlled the fire in about a half hour but there was extensive mop-up required, Hartford said.

It appears the fire was smoldering inside the building for some time before flames were seen outside. The cause and origin are under investigation and there is no damage estimate, Hartford said.
