Little League Minors TOC: Dixon Clinches Second-Straight TOC Title With 10-0 Blowout of Winters

The Cardinals used a five-run first inning and a stellar outing by Jerick Maghoney to repeat as champs.

It was over before it really even started.

The Dixon Cardinals used a seven-walk first inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead, and added runs in the third and fourth innings to crush the Giants 10-0 in just four innings, winning their second-straight District 64 Minors Tournament of Champions title.

The Cardinals overcame a 4-3 first round defeat to Winters to win three straight games enroute to capturing back-to-back titles.

“I feel bad for the Giants team,” Dixon coach Jeff Maghoney said. “They didn’t even get a chance to compete today.”

Winters starting pitcher Ruben Valencia walked the first six batters of the game before being relieved without recording a single out in the game. Valencia walked in a pair of runs and allowed another to score on a wild pitch before being replaced by Jack Bratset, who gave up a single to allow A.J. O’Neal to score. He then tossed a wild pitch on ball four to Thomas Duncan, which allowed Seth Parrish to score and end the inning. No more than five runs can be scored in one inning in the Minors division.

Cardinals starter Jerick Maghoney nearly went the distance, pitching three and two-thirds innings and striking out seven.

Maghoney worked his way out of a tough jam in the third. He recorded the first two outs of the inning with strikeouts but allowed back-to-back walks after Winters’ Tristan Sturgeon reached based earlier in the inning with a single to load the bases. Maghoney would get Jason Drummond to strikeout-looking to end the threat.

“I told Jerick ‘just stay on where you always have been. Keep the ball over the plate, and just keep it low.’ He did it,” said the elder Maghoney. “He stepped up tonight.”

The younger Maghoney along with the majority of the Cardinals roster will move up into the Majors division next season.
