The new year has arrived and many of us will be hitting the gym in the hopes of meeting that eternal resolution to lose 20 pounds. Whether it’s to build muscle, lose weight, get toned, or just look great for that class reunion later in the year, the right gym or program can often be the difference between meeting your goal and postponing it to next year.

Dixon Fitness, located at 1115 Stratford Avenue across from Safeway, offers a variety of strength and cardio machines. The locally-owned gym offers a one-year contract for $38 a month with no enrollment and the first month free.
“We have a really friendly and non-intimidating atmosphere. We’re a gym where we know our customers by name,” said Sam Carbajal, a Dixon Fitness employee who emphasized the club’s customer service. When they are not helping customers, the staff is working out on the various machines, themselves so know how they work and what they are supposed to do. Tony Stewart, another employee at the gym, lost over 60 pounds.

Curves
Curves of Dixon, located at 1910 North Lincoln, is very unique in that it is exclusive to and designed just for women. The workout system is a 30 minute circuit of strength building and cardio machines alternating with rest or stretch stations. The 30 second intervals of machine workouts alternating with rest pads provide an effective yet not overwhelming workout.
Membership is $44 a month, however they offer family memberships for an extra $10 for each additional person. Membership also includes travel passes that allow you to go to Curves in other cities if you are out of town for a couple of days.
Recently, Curves has been expanding the products and programs it offers. Most recently it introduced Curves+Zumba, a variation of the cardio routine that combines the traditional circuit with Zumba’s Latin dances. Also, Curves is rolling out an online weight management system called Curves Complete that allows you to keep track of calorie intake and exersize habits. There is also a full line of vitamins, supplements, and meal replacement smoothies that Curves offers.
“It’s just fun to be here,” said Dixon resident and Curves co-owner Dorothy Luedke, “But I think the main draw is that it’s 30 minutes and you’re in and out and done for the day.”
