The Mediterranean fruit fly is native to Africa but has spread to other parts of the world. It can infest more than 250 types of fruits and vegetables, including grapes, apples, pears, tomatoes and walnuts, according
to the state Food and Agriculture Department.
The damage caused by larval feeding makes the fruit unfit for human consumption and can cause a severe economic impact due to restrictions on the export of fresh fruit both domestically and internationally, state
officials said.
