For Residents of Napa & Solano Counties: License Law AB 60

Safety & Responsible Implementation presentations set in Dixon and Napa this week.

Assemblymember Mariko Yamada (Davis) along with experts from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will co-host informational presentations on Assembly Bill 60 in the cities of Napa and Dixon next week.

“In 2013, my colleagues and I approved AB 60 to address unlicensed and uninsured drivers on California’s roads,” Assemblymember Yamada said. “Due to the numerous changes that come with the implementation of AB 60, I have partnered with the DMV to host a panel of experts that will provide study materials and answer any questions from the community.”

There are approximately 1.4 million unlicensed and uninsured drivers on the road, many of whom are unable to receive a license because they are undocumented. AB 60, authored by Assemblymember Luis Alejo, aims to improve safety by allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for a driver’s license if they meet a set of criteria. Once properly licensed, these drivers must also purchase auto insurance as required by law.

The DMV is currently drafting new regulations and preparing field offices to process the new applications. Future applicants may begin preparing for the written exam by reading the California Driver Handbook, which is available in ten languages on the DMV website as well as at any local DMV field office. Applicants may make appointments with the DMV for the written exam after AB 60 goes into effect on January 1, 2015.

To RSVP or for more information, please contact Assemblymember Yamada’s office at (530) 662-7867 or (707) 552-4405.
