Solano Co. Man Identified In Fatal I-80 Crash
The three-vehicle collision happened early Sunday as I-80 was closing in both directions, according to the California Highway Patrol.

SOLANO COUNTY, CA — California Highway Patrol officials released more information Monday about a multi-vehicle fatal crash early Sunday on Interstate Highway 80 near Vacaville. According to CHP Solano Area officials and the county coroner's office, 60-year-old Vallejo man Ricardo Gamboa died as a result of the 12:20 a.m. collision on westbound I-80, east of Midway Road.
The crash involving three cars occurred as crews were preparing to close I-80 in both directions for construction of the Midway Road overcrossing, CHP Officer David Harvey said in a news release.
The number one lane was closed but the number two and three lanes were still open, Harvey said. As traffic was beginning to slow for the merge, a black Chrysler 300 driven by a 59-year-old Pleasant Hill woman June Caldwell was in the number three lane and a silver Honda CRV driven by a 49-year-old Vallejo man in the number two lane, according to Harvey.

"The exact order in the collision is yet to be determined, but what is known is a black Expedition ... was approaching the rear of both vehicles and failed to slow down," Harvey said.
The Expedition driven by a 35-year-old Rio Linda woman sideswiped the left side of Chrysler and struck the rear of the Honda, according to Harvey.

Gamboa was a passenger in the backseat of the Honda and suffered fatal injuries on impact, authorities said.
The driver of the Honda and two other passengers in the car — all residents of Vallejo — suffered major injuries and were rushed to Kaiser Vacaville hospital.
CHP has determined neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the collision.
