Solano Community College Biotech & Science Building Lauded

FAIRFIELD,CA – Solano Community College announced recently that it is the recipient of a National Award of Merit in the Educational Facilities category for its Biotechnology and Science Building. The high award, given by the Design-Build Institute of America, will be announced during the Design-Build Conference & Expo in New Orleans, LA, in November.

“We are very proud of this accomplishment,” said SCC President Celia Esposito-Noy. “It not only showcases our commitment to providing out biotechnology and science students with a state-of-the-art facility, which is the cornerstone of our new Bachelor of Science degree. This was an extraordinary project and our team exceeded our expectations to achieve this goal.”

Located on SCC’s Vacaville campus and designed by Smith Group JRR, Inc. with construction by Rudolph & Sletten, the single-story, 33,310-square-foot biotech and science building includes four laboratories with anterooms, prep spaces, clean rooms and a viewing gallery -- with a building serving as the hub for SCC’s new Bachelor of Science in biotechnology degree, built to California Green Building Standards Code.

SCC’s two biology labs include a connecting prep space, anatomy lab with both wet and dry work areas and storage and a chemistry lab with storage and prep spaces. Additionally, the building includes faculty offices, student interactive spaces and an energy generator to assist during times of power interruptions.

According to DBIA, the National Award of Merit in the Educational Facilities category signifies that SCC’s project team went above and beyond in achieving cost, schedule and quality goals while demonstrating unique applications of design-build best practices to raise the bar. The project will be showcased during the Design-Build Conference & Expo, and within the organization for the remainder of the year.
