Dr. Teri Yumae, music faculty at Solano Community College, explained, βThis grant is for 5 years, and we are excited to begin to establish this program in our region. Students will be paired with professional musicians from the Bay Area, Sacramento, and Northern California and will attend rehearsals for each concert series with members of SONC.β
The scholarships are available for the following orchestral instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, harp and piano. There is no age maximum. Students of all ages are welcome to apply for these positions.
The $200 scholarship will be paid at the end of the term.
Scholarship students must be available to enroll in the college Orchestra course at Solano Community College on Monday evenings, 7-9:30pm. High school students who are interested in applying for the scholarship must have a recommendation from their music teacher.
SONC is established in conjunction with Solano Community Collegeβs new transfer music degree which guarantees transfer at junior level, to a CSU, after completing a 2-year program. Members of SONC are not required to be in the music major program, but are encouraged to do so if they are interested in having lessons, music theory, and additional ensemble experience.
SONC will present two more scheduled performances this term at the Solano Community College Theatre: Swan Lake with the Benicia Ballet on April 18th and 19th. SONCβs Fall 2015 season will have two stand-alone concerts for the orchestra, as well as Nutcracker performances with both Benicia Ballet Theatre and Napa Regional Dance Company.
To apply, students should contact Dr. Teri Yumae by phone at 707-864-7000 ext. 4687.
