This Year's Dixon May Fair Showcases Fine Arts for the Masses

Anyone who visits the Dixon May Fair this weekend will not want to miss the art showcase

Apart from the flashy activities and main attractions at the May Fair, this year’s fine arts showcase includes a various selection of breathtaking pieces. Ranging from novice to amateur and professional divisions, the vast array of expression did not disappoint.

Among some of the more diverse and unique pieces were the mixed media and oil pastels. One piece, done by Dixon’s own Ethel Calvello, features a landscape of cowboys herding cattle across a river. What makes this piece unique is it was not done on a canvas, but on a metal saw; surely fitting to the May Fair theme and something to see up close.

Also notable for its unique display is “Freedom Seekers” by Vacaville’s Marna Parks. “Freedom Seekers” features a collage of animals with a beautiful forest in the background.

Winning first place and best in show for the amateur oil acrylic and pastel division was Lor Borchers for his brilliant portrayal of a race horse and his jockey in “To the Gate II.”

The three dimensional mixed media captivates the viewers senses as the art comes to life. “By the Sea” by Deborah Bently is a photo of a mountainous coast line melded together with bits and pieces of written poetry laden with shells and drift wood. Winning first place and best in show for professional mixed media, “Look Towards the Sun” by Fairfield’s Laura Caron displays two farmers overlooking a field of three dimensional sunflowers.

It must be hard for the judges to rank these pieces accordingly with so much talent being entered in this year’s fine art’s showcase.
