Our final Town Hall Meetings for parents and guardians are on Monday, July 13 for middle and high school families, and Tuesday, July 14th for all grade levels in Spanish. Both meetings begin at 6:30 and will be held via Zoom. Information on how to join the meetings is on the front page of the District website.

We are coming very close to the point in time where a decision about how we will reopen school beginning on August 10th will be made. The Governing Board will devote its entire meeting on Thursday, July 16th to hearing a final presentation from staff, taking public input, and making a decision on the specific model that will be used to reopen. The meeting begins at 6:00 P.M. and will be held electronically via Zoom. Information on how to join will be available on the District website and through a link posted on our Facebook page

We want to be clear that no decision has been made at this time and that there is not a final recommendation in place yet. We are finalizing the options to present to the Board, taking parent and guardian input through Town Hall Meetings, and tracking the very latest information coming from the public health agencies whose guidance we are following. The process to prepare for a decision will not be complete until we are ready to hold the Board Meeting on the 16th.

Reiterating prior communication, we want to be clear on our priorities and areas of focus as we get ready to make a decision on how to open school.

  • The health and safety of our students, families, and staff.
  • Providing our students with meaningful and effective learning opportunities that address their current needs, including learning loss as a result of the prior closure of schools.
  • Providing our students with disabilities, English Learners, students performing below grade-level, and others who need additional academic supports with that assistance.
  • Supporting students with mental health, social-emotional, and other non-academic needs that may interfere with their ability to perform in the academic program.
  • Support our families who face challenges in adapting to potential alternative scheduling approaches or distance learning.

The range of options under consider consist of these options, with many specific variables within each of them. All options include strong health and safety protocols intended to minimize the risk for students and staff.

  • A full, physical return to school for all students.
  • A blended return to school consisting of some time in-person and some time in a distance learning model. The amount of time in-person and in the distance model could vary overall, including by specific grade-level ranges.
  • A full distance learning model with no physical return to school for any students.

A full distance learning model will be available for any family - that for any reason - does not want their child to return to school.

Following the Board’s decision on Thursday night, the District will be distributing a document via mail to each household and email for those who wish to enroll in distance learning to make that request. It is our intent to get this document out on Friday, July 17th, and provide families a short window of time in which to respond. It is crucial that families who want to enroll in distance learning return this form in a timely manner so that we can appropriately plan for classes and staffing.

The decision about the reopening model is the most significant and challenging issue before the Governing Board in many years, if not ever. There are many strong feelings on all sides of the issues and there is a potential that our school community could become divided after the decision is made. We are calling on everyone to support whatever plans are adopted - even if you disagree with them. Difficult choices must be made, The Board will make them with a great deal of information and input, and with the mindset of doing the best thing for our students and staff. We won’t be successful in our efforts if we are arguing and treating each other poorly. True support of our students and staff will mean we all pull together to implement whatever is decided to the best of all of our abilities.

We thank everyone who is making the effort to stay informed and involved, and hope that you will make the effort to join the Board Meeting next Thursday.
