1 Killed, 6 Injured in Multi-Car Pile-Up on I-580 Saturday

The crash occurred near the Altamont Pass.

At least 16 cars were involved in two related pile-up collisions Saturday afternoon in Alameda County on Interstate Highway 580, including an eight-car collision that left one man dead and six people injured, a fire official said. California Highway Patrol officers and emergency medical personnel responded shortly after 4 p.m. to a report of a multi-vehicle collision in the eastbound lanes of I-580 just east of North Flynn Road near Livermore, CHP Officer William Ogilvie said.

Alameda County Fire Department Battalion Chief Alan Evans said there were really two collisions at the location involving eight cars each. Evans said he wasn’t sure how many people were injured in the first pile-up, but no one suffered critical injuries. Those cars started moving over to the shoulder when a related collision occurred in the same area, he said. One man from that pile-up was declared dead at the scene, Evans said.

A woman was airlifted to a trauma center with critical injuries and five other people suffered minor to moderate injuries and were transported to the hospital, he said. CHP issued a Sig-alert at about 4:30 p.m. for the two left lanes. The lanes reopened at about 8:30 p.m., according to CHP.
