14 Santa Rita Jail Inmates Test Positive For Coronavirus

Twelve inmates with COVID-19 have recovered, Alameda County Sheriff's Office said.

DUBLIN, CA — A total of 14 inmates and two workers at Santa Rita Jail have been sickened by the new coronavirus, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

Twelve patients have recovered, including six since Tuesday. One inmate with COVID-19 was released from custody.

Santa Rita Jail has just 70 percent of the inmates it had on March 1, when there were 2,597 people in jail. Now there are 1,801.

Judges have been allowing the release of some inmates for public health reasons. The jail has also asked police to only book offenders who are a threat to public safety.

Visits are suspended, except for visits between inmates and attorneys. More video and phone calls are permitted.
