99 Ranch Market - a Culinary Adventure

I love the amazing smells of the taro bread, the crispy whole ducks and the pork buns and veggie egg rolls.

I decided to go to 99 Ranch Market because I was on the search for some of my favorite Hello Kitty marshmallows or any other delicious Hello Kitty confections.

I did not know what to expect at the store on 4299 Rosewood Drive in Pleasanton; it was my first time in an Asian-specialty store and it can sometimes be overwhelming to start a new food adventure.

A little background history about this store’s location from the manager Danny Li: The store opened on Tuesday, April 20 and is just over 45,000 square feet and features several departments besides what you would need at a regular food store.

It includes an expanded hot deli, a bakery, and a large dining area.

Upon browsing the store, I felt like I was in culinary heaven because of the amazing smells of the taro bread, the crispy whole ducks and my personal favorite, the pork buns and veggie egg rolls. Much to my delight, that was only the hot deli and bakery part of the store.

Next was the frozen food and dry goods section. This was where I could find lumpia wrappers, and any kind of Chinese food my heart desired. The dry goods had tons of udon noodles, bento flakes and all different types of loose teas and spices. I picked up some green, black and chai teas for less than $5.

I then took a slight detour to the meats and seafood section before hitting the snacks and saw lots of live catfish and lobster. Plus there were a lot of yellow chickens and fresh steaks. Seems like a lot fresh meats and seafood that would be great for summer grilling.

Next were the crown jewels — the candy and snack aisle. They had everything from taro chips to shrimp puffs. I then saw what I had been hoping for — pineapple-flavored Hello Kitty marshmallows.

Yummy — these are best used in Jello or Rice Krispy Treats.

This adventure ended at the fruit and veggie section; I picked up some star fruit and bright mangos for a yummy fruit salad I will be making for a weekend barbecue.

All and all, this is a great place for anyone who needs specialty Asian groceries and perfect for the cook who wants to make some healthier versions of Asian favorites.
