Alameda County Offers Inmate Early Release Notifications

With fewer inmates staying in jail amid the coronavirus pandemic, the DA's Office wants victims to be empowered with information.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — The Alameda County District Attorney's Office wants crime victims to know that they're eligible to be notified when an inmate is released.

Fewer arrestees have been staying behind bars due to overcrowding concerns at Santa Rita Jail during the coronavirus pandemic. There are nearly 660 fewer inmates now than there were March 1, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

More than 1,900 inmates are currently housed at the jail.

While the DA's Office said on its site that it seeks to notify all victims of changes related to sentencing, release and parole hearings, victims are also encouraged to sign up for notifications.

Next of kin and witnesses also have the right to be informed of release date changes, the DA's Office said.
