Dublin Could Need Nearly 3,000 EV Charging Ports By 2045

The Dublin City Council will consider adopting an infrastructure plan aimed at supporting electric vehicle growth and climate goals.

DUBLIN, CA — The Dublin City Council will consider a new Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Plan aimed at expanding public charging access. City staff recommend adopting a resolution approving the plan, though approval would not authorize construction of new charging ports, and any future charging projects would require separate council approval.

City staff say increasing access to charging infrastructure is crucial to achieving the city's goal of carbon neutrality by 2045, and other long-term climate goals.

As of March 2026, the city has 222 publicly accessible Level 2 chargers and 78 fast chargers installed. By 2045, the city could require as many as 1,450 Level 2 charging ports and more than 1,400 fast-charging ports.

A citywide analysis identified potential locations for additional stations, including 13 high-ranking private sites which could potentially accommodate up to 156 Level 2 chargers and 36 fast chargers. Other sites include high-density residential areas, employment centers, educational facilities, commercial districts, and city properties.

As of late 2024, Dublin has one of the highest rates of electric vehicle ownership in California, with more than 9,200 registered electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, according to a city staff report.
