DUBLIN, CA — The Dublin City Council will consider merging the Parks and Community Services and Human Services Commission, effective Jan. 1, 2027. Officials say the move would streamline operations and reduce costs. Members of both commissions unanimously endorsed the consolidation during a meeting in August, according to the staff report.
The Human Services Commission was established in 2013, and currently meets three times a year to evaluate grant applications, according to a city staff report. The Parks and Community Services Commission advises the city on parks, recreational programs, community events, and more. It also reviews recommendations from the Youth Advisory Committee for the annual Youth Mini-Grant Program.
City staff say that the commissions share broader goals, including improving residents' quality of life and expanding access to equitable and affordable services. If approved, the consolidated commission would retain the Parks and Community Services and review applications to Dublin's Human Services Grants Program, which supports local nonprofits providing services such as food assistance, child care, senior programs, and other community resources.
The combined commission would initially include eight regular members and one student representative. Beginning in January 2029. It would include six regular members and one student representative. No sitting commissioner's term would be shortened, and three new commissioners will be appointed in January.
Staff said the change would save money by reducing commissioner stipends and the administrative costs of coordinating separate meetings.
