DUBLIN, CA — Police searched the Dublin home of Jonathan McKinsey's estranged wife, according to several media outlets. Candice Jang's parents, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, are accused of fatally shooting McKinsey, 40, at the Dublin Sports Grounds on Sept. 26.
A Dublin Police Services captain confirmed to KRON4 that the department executed a search warrant at Jang's home on Sept. 29. Police also told ABC7 that they took "pertinent evidence," but did not elaborate on what. SFGATE spoke to a neighbor who said they saw Jang's car being towed and her phone being taken, though police have not confirmed those details.
Patch reached out to Dublin Police Services for further information.
McKinsey was embroiled in a contentious divorce and custody battle with Jang at the time of his death. Both Jang and McKinsey had filed petitions for restraining orders against one another, with each accusing the other of abuse involving themselves or their children. McKinsey was also facing misdemeanor child-abuse charges, which he had denied.
In a petition for a restraining order, McKinsey, a transgender man, also alleged that Chen had directed anti-LGBTQ slurs at him and his children, and that Zhang had punched him in the chest when he was recovering from a double mastectomy surgery.
Zhang and Chen were charged with murder, along with several enhancements and special circumstance allegations. Prosecutors allege that both Zhang and Chen intentionally killed McKinsey by lying in wait and personally firing guns during the attack.
Both Zhang and Chen are being held at Santa Rita Jail without bail. They were scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 30, but asked for additional time before entering formal pleas. Their next scheduled plea hearing is Oct. 19, according to SFGATE.
Curtis Briggs, a court-appointed lawyer for Shili Chen, said his client plans to plead not guilty, according to The Associated Press.
