Into The Battle-Shield: Youth Donate Face Shields To Hospitals

The Breaking BEARriers nonprofit shares how it's pitching in to help the fight against the new coronavirus and how you can help.

A letter from the Breaking BEARriers:

DUBLIN, CA — The Breaking BEARriers; a registered 501C3 (non-profit organization) founded by a group of 8th graders is supporting local hospitals in the fight against COVID-19 by DIY-ing face shields.

Currently, they are working on a project to make and deliver free face shields to front-line hospital and health care workers. Over 600 face shields have already been used in several health care facilities including: Fremont Washington Hospital, Gateway Healthcare Center in Hayward, Highland hospital in Oakland, etc. This week, the Dublin Rotary Club helped turn the project international. Their partnership has allowed for face shields to be delivered to countries in dire situations like Guatemala.

After many attempts and experiments, the team came up with a final, perfected design. The face shields are composed of one plastic sheet, and two bands that create the structure of the mask. In order to meet up with the number of face shields required by medical professionals, they have started to get the community involved. They strive to make the world a better place one step at a time -- and in this case, one hospital at a time.

Altogether, the Breaking BEARriers is successfully supporting frontline healthcare workers and continues to do so. They hope to get the community involved in their campaign of#SpreadLoveNotGerms.
