Update: Officer from Dublin Accidentally Shot in the Leg at Chabot Gun Club

Officer airlifted to a hospital after shooting himself at a Castro Valley gun range.

A Camp Parks police officer who accidentally shot himself in the leg Wednesday during a training exercise may be released from Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley as early as today, according to Dan Gannod, a public affairs officer for Camp Parks.

The officer has been receiving treatment for the bullet wound, Gannod said.

The Camp Parks police officer was performing regular training at the Chabot Gun Club in Castro Valley and accidentally shot himself in the leg about 9:20 a.m.  Wednesday, according Gannod.

Camp Parks is an Army Reserve training area in Dublin.

Gannod said the officer received immediate medical care and was airlifted to the hospital.

"The incident is under investigation, and therefore no further details are being released at this time," said Gannod.

He said the weapon used in the incident  likely was a 9-mm Beretta. Officers typically train with their service weapons.

The officer's name and age have not been released.

Law enforcement agencies and other specialized groups are allowed to rent the ranges at the gun club most days of the week, with private use offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, according to the gun club's voice-mail message.
