Controlling Coyote Behavior

It has come to our attention that coyote sightings continue to occur in Dublin. The City has contacted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, which provided information and suggestions on how to deal with coyotes in your neighborhood:

• Coyotes may be seen day or night.

• Coyotes very rarely pose a threat to humans, but small pets are an attraction.

• Small pets should be kept indoors and only go outside when attended to by owners. Keep rodents at bay.

• Secure your garbage, and make sure no food is left outside for pets or other wildlife.

• Residents should make an effort to discourage coyotes from encroaching on property by hazing them. Make loud noises, chase after them, throw sticks or rocks at them, etc. A coyote will develop an aversion to being near people and homes and become wary of an area if they are continually hazed.

• Motion sprinklers and lights will likely also deter coyotes from entering yards.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife do not come out and trap or relocate coyotes, as they will simply gravitate to a different neighborhood.
