Dublin Breaks Ground on $33 Million Water Park

The City of Dublin broke ground on a $33 million water park known as the Emerald Glen Recreation and Aquatic Complex today. The facility is being constructed in the Emerald Glen Park, at 4201 Central Parkway. When completed, the new facility will feature a number of water slides, an outdoor water playground pool with a beach entrance, a competition pool, and an indoor swimming pool.

The park plans also include a 31,000 square foot building with a fitness center, locker rooms, and administrative spaces, according to city documents. When it’s completed in two years, the facility will use a total of 480,000 gallons of water, according to Parks and Community Services Director Paul McCreary.

“We’re working closely with the water district, and in two years when we’re ready to fill the pools we’ll determine what the best course of action is,” McCreary said. City documents indicate that the construction contract was awarded to Overaa Construction of Richmond for $33,090,000 or $36,399,000 (with 10 percent contingency funds). Including soft-costs like personnel, the overall cost of the park is estimated at $42 million, according to McCreary. He also said that a majority of that funding will come from the city’s impact development fees.

“This is a need driven by the increased growth,” McCreary said. Lori Taylor, the city’s economic development director, said the park may grow to fund it’s own operations in the future. “We anticipate that in the beginning it will require subsidy, and we hope over time that it becomes self supporting,” Taylor said.
