Fireworks Rules Around The Tri-Valley: What To Know

TRI-VALLEY — As 4th of July celebrations start ramping up, local police departments are warning that the use or possession of fireworks remains illegal in much of the Tri-Valley.

Fireworks remain illegal in Danville, San Ramon, Pleasanton, and Livermore. In Pleasanton, violations may result in the seizure of fireworks, citations, and fines of up to $1000 per offense. Livermore’s fireworks ordinance includes a social hosting provision that holds the property owner or party host liable if the person using them cannot be determined. Livermore said that citations of up to $500 could be issued.

The Alameda County Board of Supervisors recently adopted an ordinance that applies to unincorporated parts of the county that imposes $500 for the first violation, $750 for the second, and up to $1,000 for subsequent violations. Like Livermore’s ordinance, the new ordinance holds property owners and tenants personally liable for allowing the use of illegal fireworks on their property or in their residence.

Dublin allows for the controlled sale of “Safe and Sane Fireworks,” or California State Fire Marshal-approved fireworks that don’t launch into the air or explode, including sparklers, fountains, pinwheels, and smokeballs. Sales by approved nonprofit groups will take place throughout the city until noon Sunday. See here for the full list of booth locations.

Approved fireworks are allowed to be used between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. on July 4 only at the following locations:

• Alamo Creek Park (7601 Shady Creek Road)
• Dublin Sports Grounds (6700 Dublin Boulevard)
• Emerald Glen Park (Gleason Drive parking lot)
• Shannon Park (11600 Shannon Avenue)

No fireworks of any type, including Safe and Sane fireworks, are allowed anywhere else, especially multi-housing units or any undesignated park, facility, or school. The city said anyone caught using illegal fireworks may face the maximum penalties allowed by state law, which could include up to $50,000 in fines and up to a year in jail, depending on the amount.
