Heavy Rain, High Winds, Freezing Temps Coming To Danville

DANVILLE, CA — A Level 2 winter storm is expected to bring heavy rain, gusty winds, and chilly temperatures to Danville starting Thursday morning.

Anywhere from a half-inch to an inch of rain is expected to start falling at around 4 a.m. Thursday and last until roughly noon, according to AccuWeather. Gusts of wind of up to 31 mph are predicted later in the morning, bringing a wind chill temperature of about 40 degrees.

The storm is expected to bring up to 1.15 inches of rain near the coast, and up to four feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

Chilly temperatures are expected to continue into Friday morning, and the National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Watch in Danville and throughout the interior East Bay from 11 p.m. Thursday until 9 a.m. Friday. AccuWeather predicts temperatures could drop as low as 35 degrees Thursday night, though the National Weather Service warns that they could dip into the 20s.

Residents are advised to protect sensitive plants, and cover outdoor pipes to avoid freezing.

Friday will see a brief respite from the rain, but it will come back Saturday and Sunday, bringing winds of up to 16 miles an hour and about a half-inch of rain spread out over about five hours each day.

Danville residents and businesses can get up to 20 sandbags at the Town Maintenance Services Department at 1000 Sherburne Hills Road, near the post office. Sand bags and a shovel are available. See here for more information.

Anyone in unincorporated Contra Costa County can pick up sandbags at any of six locations around the county.

Here are a few flood safety tips, courtesy of the CDC and the City of Dublin:

• Gathering at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable food and water.
• Have immunization records handy.
• Check your emergency supplies.
• Bring in outdoor items or tie them securely.
• Keep your car fueled and cell phone charged.
• Avoid low-lying areas subject to flooding and don’t drive in flooded areas.
• Never drink flood water. During a water advisory, use only bottled, boiled, or treated water for drinking.
• Listen to boil advisories to know if water is safe for bathing and drinking.
• Use generators at least 20 feet from any doors, windows, or vents to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Clean debris from storm drains.
• Keep garbage cans and cars at least one foot from the curb to avoid blocking stormwater flows.
