Inmate Dies Just Before Release From Dublin Jail

DUBLIN, CA — A 40-year-old man who was scheduled for release from Santa Rita Jail in Dublin died in custody early Wednesday morning, according to an Alameda County sheriff's spokesman. The inmate told deputies working in the release area around 1 a.m. that he would prefer to be released at a later time.

Deputies spoke with him again just before 4 a.m., and he informed them he was not feeling well. Medical staff said he was conscious, but appeared to be in medical distress, and then he became unresponsive while medical staff and jailhouse deputies were present. The inmate was transported to a hospital and was pronounced dead around 5:35 a.m.

Sheriff's detectives and personnel from the county district attorney's office are investigating, per county protocol. Deputies say the man had a history of medical problems, but an autopsy will be conducted to determine an official cause of death. His name is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
