Schmidt has served 23 years in law enforcement, 18 of which were spent in Dublin. He will take over March 19.

DUBLIN, CA — Dublin City Manager Linda Smith appointed Commander Nathan Schmidt of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office to serve as the new chief of the Dublin Police Services, effective March 19. Schmidt will replace retiring Chief Garrett Holmes.
Schmidt, a native of Livermore and graduate of Granada High School, has worked in law enforcement for over 23 years, according to a city news release. 18 of those years were spent in Dublin. He began in September 1999 as an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, and worked at Santa Rita Jail, and later as a patrol officer and then detective for Dublin Police Services.
In December 2006, Schmidt advanced to the rank of sergeant, then as patrol supervisor and detective supervisor. After being promoted to lieutenant in December 2011, he worked at the Glenn E. Dyer Jail in Oakland and at Eden Township Station before returning to Dublin Police Services to serve as an operations lieutenant and administrative lieutenant.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to return to Dublin Police Services as Police Chief,” Schmidt said in a statement. “Chief Holmes developed strong foundational principles and community partnerships, providing a great example to follow to ensure Dublin Police continues to provide the best service to the community. Police-community partnerships are most successful when the two support one another. I also hope to stay on the cutting edge of technology, giving our staff the best tools possible to be efficient and successful in keeping Dublin safe.”
