Senior Animals in Need of a Second Chance

East Bay SPCA Tri-Valley shares information about the Silver Whiskers and Silver Muzzle Club, which gives senior pets a second chance.

Once you have decided to adopt a pet, it's time to look for a good match for your living situation and family dynamics. Often at the shelter, we see that younger animals or those who are perceived as more vibrant, experience shorter stays. Many visitors naturally gravitate toward puppies and kittens, whose stays in the shelter can be days or weeks.

Senior pets can be harder to place because of a (somewhat false) sense that they have less to offer and will be harder to care for overall. Any animal 8 years or older who enters our shelter becomes part of the Silver Whiskers and Silver Muzzle Club, a special segment of Club Second Chance.

This program aims to promote the adoption of these loving and still vibrant cats and dogs. These senior guys and gals still have spunk and can play and enjoy life. We offer a discounted adoption fee and ongoing discounts with local businesses so that adopters can provide their golden guys and girls with all they need. Seniors themselves also receive an additional discount when adopting an animal 8 years or older.

Senior animals are often already trained and socialized with other animals and people, and their personalities and preferences are in place. They make wonderful companions and family members, and often have many years of love left to give. We hope people will consider adopting a senior pet, and providing a second chance to animals like Yoshi and Triton.

Triton

Triton is an eight-year-old, 8 pound domestic short hair senior gentleman who deserves a loving family to spend his golden years with. He is a mellow, lovable fellow who loves to cuddle, and isn't shy about asking for affection. He enjoys lap-time, nap-time and head rubs. Triton is a gentle guy who would fit nicely into most any home. Triton has been waiting for his forever home for 6 months.
