Swalwell Donors Request Over $1.5M In Refunds: Report

DUBLIN, CA — More than 200 donors to Eric Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign are requesting over $1.5 million in refunds, according to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle. Swalwell suspended his campaign and resigned from Congress earlier this month amid numerous sexual assault allegations.

A former staff member told The Chronicle that there is no “clear direction in place.”

“We have not received an authorized procedure or clear direction on the refund process,” they wrote. “We apologize, as this is not the update we were hoping to provide. If it were up to me and my former colleagues, refunds would be the top priority.”

Campaign finance filings from earlier this month showed that Swalwell had $4 million in campaign cash on hand, and roughly $200,000 in unpaid debts, according to The Chronicle. The report also showed a $40,000 payment to a defense attorney, though that attorney declined to tell the paper whether Swalwell used campaign funds for that expense.

There is no federal election law requiring campaigns to refund donations upon request.

Swalwell is currently being investigated by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.
