Vape Sale Ban Considered By Dublin City Council

The proposal would ban the sale of electronic vaping devices and flavored tobacco products in Dublin.

DUBLIN, CA — The Dublin City Council is set to consider a ban on the sale of electronic vaping devices and flavored tobacco products within the city limits. The proposal comes after similar ordinances passed in Livermore, Richmond and San Francisco County amid growing public concern about youth use and a lack of research about the safety of vaping.

Dublin's proposal, however, ups the ante.

While Livermore, Richmond and San Francisco's vape sale have carved out exceptions for the sale of unflavored, U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved vape devices, Dublin retailers would be banned from selling any type of vape device, according to a document posted ahead of the Monday meeting.

If approved, the city would begin enforcing the ban in July.

If that proposal flops, the city has laid out some alternatives. Dublin could consider: an 89-cent tobacco excise tax that would be put to voters; setting a minimum price for tobacco products; banning tobacco product coupons, promotions or discounts; banning tobacco sales in pharmacies; limit the number of tobacco retailers; forcing tobacco retailers farther away from certain city facilities; and more.
