'Antigone' Play by Rockdale Students

Classic Greek drama by Rockdale 6th-graders at LAUSD arts benefit tonight.

Ancient Greece came alive on Friday, complete with sword fights, contested throne successions and family drama, as a group of Rockdale Elementary School sixth-graders presented the Sophoclean classic "Antigone."

Rehearsed in just 9 weeks, the students bore most of the responsibility for the production and ran the show pretty much without grown-up help.

The play is an adaption of Sophocles' classic tragedy, and the story revolves around heroine Antigone's decision to defy the powers that be to bury her slain brother, thus incurring the death sentence, but also the sympathy of the gods.
