“TESSERAE AND TURNING”
AN EXPLORATION OF FORM AND TEXTURE
A GROUP ART FEATURING:
MARY CLARK-CAMARGO, SANDY HUSE, BILL LOITZ AND DEB SEGIL
NEW STONE AGE MOSAIC STUDIO
SEPTEMBER 8 – OCT.14, 2012
Tesserae and Turning is the brainchild of Mary Clark-Camargo and Sandy Huse. Clark, a mosaic artist and Huse a wood turner both use natural material in their art and decided to do a show, showcasing the organic nature and beauty of their discipline.
Bill Loitz and Deb Segil both wood turners were brought on board because of their excellent use of form and material.
The result is an arts show that is both organic and highly artisanal. Each piece has taken hours of patience and skill to take raw materials and either cut or carve a form that showcases the beauty of nature while respectfully manipulating it.
MARY CLARK-CAMARGO
Using a vast assortment of exotic glass, tile, semi-precious stone and other "found" objects she intertwines intricate patterns that are at once abstract and organic in nature. These highly decorative and complex mosaic pieces are her passion and she spends many long hours on each one. She patiently cuts and fits thousands of pieces of glass together knowing the satisfaction is in the final result.
SANDY HUSE
Sandy Huse makes small wooden sculptures that are turned, carved, burned and embellished and is interested in creating objects that are both functional and whimsical. Her art has been featured in local galleries as well as in several site-specific public art projects.
She believes that art and craft should be easily accessible to anyone who has an interest. To that end, she has taught classes and participated in public demonstrations and community outreach projects in the Los Angeles area.
BILL LOITZ
Bill started woodworking at a young age, with simple wood projects and even a few turned projects in middle school. While in middle school and high school his family built a house from the ground up. In the early 70’s he built the interior of a 32-foot sailboat out of Koa wood. His interest in woodturning reemerged in 2000 when he got is first “real” lathe. Since that time he has taken numerous classes from professional turners and wood workers. Turning and decorating wood art is becoming his passion in preparation for retirement from the business world
DEB SIGEL
Specializes in unique and often comical designs in wood, textiles, acrylics, and pencil. Many of her pieces are one of a kind Judaica and she is obsessed with spirals and curves as well as space travel themes.
She is an engineer by day and an educator on the weekends. Deb runs Kids Building Things, where workshops run by artists and engineers teach kids how to use tools, how things are made, and the joys of using tools to build creative things.
