HNTB-Designed 6th Street Viaduct Celebrates Official Groundbreaking with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti

In celebration of a new Los Angeles landmark, HNTB and elected officials officially break ground for new 6th Street Viaduct

It was another major milestone for HNTB in Los Angeles as local community leaders and top level public officials gathered for the official groundbreaking of the iconic 6th Street Viaduct Replacement Project. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti congratulated HNTB vice president Vic Martinez, PE on the firm’s winning design for the new bridge that spans the Los Angeles River and connects Downtown Los Angeles and Boyle Heights. HNTB’s design provides a “ribbon of arches” that will include viewing areas, improved pedestrian walkways, and bike paths for Angelenos.

For HNTB, this project represents a rare opportunity to build a modern landmark for Los Angeles that accommodates current and future traffic needs along with a dramatic design that will serve as one of the city’s major icons. Joining Mayor Garcetti were Councilmember Jose Huizar, Congressman Xavier Becerra, State Senate Pro Tem Kevin de Leon and Assemblymember Miguel Santiago, as well as nearly a dozen HNTB professionals. The viaduct is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018 and is estimated to cost $422 million.

Finally, the big day arrived for the HNTB team working on the 6th Street Viaduct Replacement project to grab some shovels and formally celebrate the exciting groundbreaking in Los Angeles for a brand new HNTB-designed landmark. The City of Los Angeles selected HNTB to deliver final design and construction support services for the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement.
