José Huizar Unveils $150,000 in Park Fitness Equipment, Gym Repairs

The expenditure at the Eagle Rock Recreation Center is a "great match" for the City's community plans, the councilmember says.

Shortly after winning an endorsement from the editorial board of La Opinión, the largest-circulation Spanish-language newspaper in Los Angeles, unveiled a new open-air “fitness zone” today at one of the most scenic and spacious parks in Eagle Rock—the —where senior citizens and children alike are a regular sight.

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the recreation center, popularly referred to as Eagle Rock Park, Huizar thanked a group of about 50 community members for raising issues important to them and stressed how his City Council office has been “trying to promote more healthy lifestyles throughout the district.”

The park, which has a range of recreational activities as well as an after-school program, now has 10 pieces of fitness equipment directly next to a picnic area. The equipment was recently installed and paid for by Huizar’s office last year, along with a new floor for an indoor gym, new basketball hoops, extra lighting and a new outdoor dumpster aimed at preventing what Public Projects Manager Paul Habib said was “a lot of illegal dumping.” The total cost of the equipment and repairs was about $150,000, Habib said.

Trying out some of the fitness equipment himself as Department of Recreation and Parks General Manager Jon Kirk Mukri looked on, Huizar called the project “a great match that fits in well with our plans.” Both the design and location of the park, he noted, were ideal for the community, and “you can even see the Eagle Rock from here.”
