Oxy Helps Build Community Literacy

A community center in the heart of Eagle Rock does for kids what few parents can provide at home.

What's Eagle Rock’s best-kept secret? Bibliophiles across L.A.—and well beyond—will tell you it’s the bookstore at Occidental College. But there’s another part of the campus that's nothing short of a hidden gem: Oxy’s Community Literacy Center.

Since 1963, students have been tutoring K-6 schoolchildren in reading and writing at the Community Literacy Center twice a week. From phonics and storytelling to the language arts and creative writing, the Center provides invaluable instruction to kids, many of who may be the first members of their family to go to school.

Click here for further details about Oxy’s Community Literacy Center, which is open from 3:30 p.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the college’s Fall and Spring semesters. And feel free to call Désirée Zamorano at (323) 259-2948 for more information or to sign up your child to be part of yet another of Eagle Rock’s convoluted secrets.
