One of the hallmarks of suburban towns that take pride in preserving their history is arguably the enduring presence of mom-and-pop shops that sell baked goods amid a proliferation of chain stores and restaurants. From old-fashioned short breads to cutting-edge cupcakes, bakeries are our link to the past—experienced here and now, organically.
In Eagle Rock, longtime bakeries include , located in a relatively busy shopping area crowded with corporate names. Local loyalty to Ruby dates back nearly 30 years. There’s the venerable , which, our culinary critic Kim Axelrod Ohannesan aptly described in a 2010 column as a “warmly lit, well-stocked” place where you can find a half-dozen brands of Panettone, “including one in a pastel, reusable tin that seems an homage to Audrey Hepburn and her ilk.” And there are also several excellent Filipino-style bakeries that have been around for years, specializing in a variety of pastries and desserts.
Okay, so let’s cut to the chase. Which is your favorite store in Eagle Rock for baked goods? Take our poll below—and then tell us in the Comments section why your choice really warms your heart so.
