📰 News we're reading

• Man accused in fatal assault pleads not guilty in death of his Menlo Park friend (paloaltoonline.com) — A 53-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter after a 52-year-old friend died following an alleged slap outside La Estrellita Market at University Avenue and Bay Road in East Palo Alto. Prosecutors say the victim identified his friend as the attacker before later dying at a hospital, and the defendant remains jailed without bail while awaiting a Sept. 22 preliminary hearing.

• Bay Area's first 'living levee' opens at Palo Alto Baylands (paloaltoonline.com) — Wastewater from East Palo Alto homes now helps irrigate a new "living levee" beside Palo Alto's Regional Water Quality Control Plant, adding an extra layer of treatment before water reaches the Bay. The 500-foot horizontal levee is designed to restore marsh habitat, protect nearby communities from sea-level rise, and could become a model for other shoreline cities.
